Behind the Brand: Setsumasa Kobayashi from Mountain Research

Originally conceived in 1993 as General Research, Setsumasa Kobayashi’s label transformed into Mountain Research in 2005 to embrace a connection with nature and reflect lessons learned from 19th century American literature, namely the transcendental writings of Henry D. Thoreau.

Drawing upon an extensive archive of military and outdoor garments, Kobayashi’s designs both reference and enhance utilitarian ideas of the past for Mountain Research.
